1st of September, 1983, there was a tragic accident that led to death of 269 people. Korean Airline (KAL) flight 007 was on the last leg of a flight from New York City to Seoul, with a stopover in Anchorage, Alaska. As it approached its final destination. The plane deviated far off its normal course. In just a short amount of time, the plane ended up nearly 200miles off course and flew over Russian airspace where some top-secret Soviet military installations were known to be located. Quickly KAL007 was spotted and followed by two fighter jets and after few attempts to contact with the pilot and failing to receive a response, flight 007 was shot down killing all 269 passengers and crew on board. There were many discussions on whether this was a spy mission or just a tragic mistake. The tension between America and Russia grew to the point of where war was in the mix of the discussions. In the end, the situation was resolved as a tragic mistake of the flight deviating off course. For my typography project, I wanted to create a typographic poster based on this event. First, I decided to focus on the main reason that caused this event, which was the deviation of the flight. I used the word deviated and cut it up on a diagonal to represent the flight going off course. The cut goes all the way through the word to show that something was going wrong from the beginning. The cut and the line also represents the radar screen where the flight was picked up by the Soviet military, and this concept was supported by the highlight green colour. The date is cut off as this was the day that this tragic event took place. Also, the date is large in size as it is one of the most important aspects of remembering this event. The introduction text gives clues to what this event was about and what the body text contains. The body text is divided into three sections and the separation between the paragraphs are carefully placed to represent that something is going wrong and also to show that there are some parts of the story that may is not being told. The ending text was placed on the bottom left side, cutting off the poster, to represent the tragic ending of this event.
